The Maitland name is synonymous with Scotland’s history. The Maitlands came to Britain from France with William the Conqueror in 1066 and settled in Northumberland. In 1590, John Maitland became Lord Chancellor of Scotland. His son was created 1st Earl of Lauderdale and his brother, William Maitland, was Secretary to Mary Queen of Scots. Since then, the home has remained the seat of the Maitlands.
Edward Maitland-Carew, the great grandson of the 15th Earl of Lauderdale will take you on a journey through the castle’s family history explaining how each generation made their mark both on the castle and on Scotland.
A light lunch provided by our local bakery, Firebrick, is available to book in addition to the tour. This will be served in the Victorian Kitchen and will include sandwiches with salad, chutney and coleslaw followed by cake and a chocolate treat and refreshments – a perfect way to complete such a special day.
